It’s definitely food! I’ve decided (yeah I know it’s February) that this year I’m going to get better at cooking. So I got some fresh tilapia from the store and seasoned it with paprika, cayenne, onion powder, salt, and black pepper, and pan fried it in butter. I sliced some potatoes down to about 1/16" and fried those with sa lt and pepper, plus the juices from the fish. It was decent!
I had some sake with it. Never had it before- I liked it more than a normal white wine, but less than a red and certainly less than mead. Luckily the bottle wasn’t too expensive or big. I also got some parmigiano reggiano rind because it was cheap and I’ve heard nice things about the cheese. I nibbled a bit of the not rind part off, and woah is that potent. Farscythe might have some suggestions of what to do with it...

I didn’t want to mention Svend in this
It’s not nearly hearty enough for him.
I thought you were a big cheese guy. I have no idea what to do with this stuff now. It’s good but I don’t often eat cheese on its own. Guess there’s a first time for everything...

Yeah, the bottle had recommendations for serving temp, it was something like 3 stars at 40-50F, 2 at room temp, 3 at 110F ish. I dunno anything sake really.

i do love my cheese.. but i either eat it on bread , melt it on toast or a bake or grate it up for pastas and well anything else i fancy sprinkling with cheese
or yeah... eat it on its own
you could bread/batter chunks of it and deep fry them.. but i dont know how well that would work with a melty cheese like that

me neither... had it once cold... hated the stuff... but that was a cheap bottle from the supermarket... had it warm and loved it... but that was a bottle me uncle brought over from japan
i couldnt even begin comparing the two
![]() 02/02/2019 at 21:14 |

oh wait... you could also use it for a nice cheese sauce... goes well with cauliflower n broccoli

Yeah, this one was like $6 for 375 mL. They had a few there, but among the cheaper bottles, it was this or a $4 180 mL. The $6 one made more sense for some reason, I dunno. I’ll try it cold and warm. Only cups I have right now are crappy plastics from a local pizza place, pint glasses, mugs, and one Stella “chalice” that I use for all my boozing that’s not beer. I feel like I should get a more proper cup but whatever.

hm. I have a few decent chunks to play around with. I think it was $9 a pound and I had about $2.50 worth, so a quarter pound ish
![]() 02/02/2019 at 21:20 |

i think i had it in shot glasses
god knows if thats right either tho
![]() 02/02/2019 at 21:22 |

There was a lil diagram in japanese on the back, the cold recommendation had what looked like a shot glass. So sure?

Oh, that would be nice. I may go for that.
![]() 02/02/2019 at 21:23 |

i think i’d go with grate some of it (coz grated cheese goes on so many things)
and experiment with the rest
foodsperiments are my favourite thing... and im not dead yet :)
(ruined a couple pots and pans and bottles tho)

I’ve yet to do harm to my cast iron. Don’t know that it’s possible to. Worst case I cook something too acidic, strip the seasoning, and have to start a new seasoning. But that’s really hard to do.
![]() 02/02/2019 at 21:27 |

oh yeah.. the cast iron is near unkillable... ive just killed a couple non sticks (well.. i killed the non stick part)
![]() 02/02/2019 at 21:29 |

I stopped buying nonsticks, my room mates and I killed three between September and December. Not worth it, plus I don’t really want to eat teflon.

i like them now coz i can cook dry in them... no oil or butter
ooo healthy :p
i have a couple cast irons too.. a pan for a purpose me thinks
(also... i need a bigger kitchen... too many pots and pans... not enough space)

Boooo. I probably consume too much butter. I don’t like using oil on my cast iron, and generally have better results with butter anyways. Not a a ton, but enough that everything slides about.
I live in a university-owned house. Kitchen consists of the cheapest oven/stovetop you can buy 500 of at a time, a sink with no garbage disposal, a microwave with no venting or light, and a dishwasher that doesn’t work. Oh well.
![]() 02/02/2019 at 21:40 |

flavour wise butter beats oil almost always
just makes it more fattening... no biggie when your young n active
but im a lazy couch potato and my youth wore off
![]() 02/02/2019 at 21:44 |
|
also.. i rent a house... probably have the same stove top.. a hot air oven.. garbage disposal in a sink isnt really a thing over here in private housing and no dishwasher
(well.. i have a dishwasher... but its me daughter.... do you pay rent? no? wash the damn dishes)

I recommend giving Hello Fresh a shot. They pre-package the ingredients and give you clear directions for getting multiple dishes ready and do it in a way that everything is ready at the same time. Once you’ve made a meal, you have the ingredient sheet, directions, and experience to make it again on your own. It’s a great way to learn, especially making whole meals and not just one dish.

My family has a history of heart disease but I’m fairly active, so I’m worried more for the cholesterol than the fat. So maybe I shouldn’t eat two eggs fried in butter daily... Hm
![]() 02/02/2019 at 21:50 |

honestly... go for it.. just make sure you get a check up regularly
cholesterol is just a blood test anyway me thinks
enjoy it till the doc says oi knock it off says i

A friend of mine did that a few times, it works out to like $9-$10 per meal, which is a lot more than I’m comfortable spending. The fish I bought was $7/lb, I cooked half, and half of that I didn’t even eat, plus a potato from a 5 lb sack that was like $4, I think this meal (not counting spices, those are imaginary, shut up) was probably less than $3 total. I could probably look around and find their recipes online, but I don’t usually follow recipes except for cook times on meats. It’d probably do my cooking good to actually follow a recipe through, though.

Wait, really? No disposal? Huh. I suppose US cities probably generally have more modern sewage systems that can handle the food waste though. We don’t get fatburgs over here. Well, we do, they just run for President.

True. And ha, doctors. In America most of us just ignore out health issues until they go away on their own or we die. Such is our way of life.
![]() 02/02/2019 at 21:58 |
|
oh we have the plumbing that could handle it.. most places anyway
we’re just used to putting all the foodwaste that isnt liquid in the green bin..... only restaurants and their like have food disposal thingies coz with that many dishes it makes a difference being able to just scrape shit into the sink

Yeah, I’ve never lived anywhere where we had more than a garbage bin and a recycle bin. My dad used to do a compost pile tucked way in the back of our yard and make us kids take stuff out to it all year. We would use it for fertilizer in the garden in the springtime.
![]() 02/02/2019 at 22:04 |

i have a green bin (food/garden waste) blue bin (paper) orange bin (plastics and aluminum) and a black bin (non recyclable general waste)
ive also got a little mini bin for batteries that i have to hand in at a local shop when its full...lol

We get them two or three times a week for a family of four. It works out to be about $6 per person per meal. The kids are learning how to cook with these meals, so it works out well for us.
![]() 02/03/2019 at 09:04 |

That’s a lot of bins but it makes sense. My understanding is that a lot of waste in the US doesn’t get recycled because there aren’t enough willing hands to sort all the recycling at the facility. All those bins means they’d have to take four trucks on route instead of two, though.
![]() 02/03/2019 at 09:08 |
|
over here bins get picked up on different days for each colour once every 2 weeks but i think they mostly use the same trucks just drop off at different locations
thats said... its still a pretty massive job involving a lot of people
![]() 02/03/2019 at 09:12 |
|
That makes a ton of sense. Here we just have two trucks (I think they’re different ones) come by every Tuesday. Doing alternating weeks would make sense. People would moan and complain about having to know a schedule though...

lol.. we have an app for that here
im old fashioned.. i just wait n see what everyone else drags out and do the same
